Did you know some rocks can float? Did you know that you eat rocks every day? Did you know that some rocks can be poisonous? Would you like to see how little today's horseshoe crab, squid, and chambered nautilus have changed since prehistoric times? Would you like to touch a rock from outer space that may be older than the earth itself? Have you ever heard about a "rock cycle" or "Moh's hardness scale"? Do we ever have earthquakes in Georgia? How can a river "run backwards
?"

Recommendations:

"The rocks and minerals presentation far exceeded my expectations! My third grade class enjoyed the program so much they hated to leave to catch the bus afterwards. The rock and mineral collection and information was so impressive, I asked if Ms. Knight could return again the next day to present it again to mine and another teacher's class.

My students were very excited to be able to see and touch so many different and beautiful rocks. It made learning the three types of rock much more fun!"

- Christine Hay, 3rd Grade Teacher, Tritt Elementary School, Cobb County, Georgia

Additional Program Information:

Kindergarten through 2nd Grade:

Exploring Rocks & Minerals Using All 5 Senses - What is the difference between a rock and a mineral? How are they formed? What do our senses tell us about them?

Light & Sound - Light/Shadow, High/Low, Long/Short: Where does light come from? What causes a shadow? What are waves? How are sound and light waves similar? How are they different? Hear the relationship between lengths of flutes and their pitch as illustrated using an international flute collection, water in glasses, and more!

Magnets - What are magnets? What is a "lodestone"? What do they do? What kinds of things are attracted or repulsed? Does magnetism work through other objects? How do we use magnets? What is a hover train?

Bonus Session: Dinosaurs & Fossils - Did dinosaurs really live? Were they here? When? What "clues" did they leave behind about their existence?

3rd - 5th Grades:

Earth & Space Science - See the difference between rocks & minerals, classifications, ways to identify them, and much more through an impressive collection of colorful and unique specimens from around the world. See the "TV rock" that inspired fiber optics. See rocks float! Did you know you need to eat rocks to survive? Did you know that some rocks are poisonous?

Meteorites, Comets and Space Debris - Learn the different types of meteorites, the differences between comets and meteorites, see tektites, and space debris.

Fossils - Touch and see petrified plants, fossilized creatures and amber-preserved insects from prehistoric periods dating back hundreds of millions of years. Discuss the similarities and differences, how the fossils came to exist, and what they may tell us about our future on our constantly-changing planet.

Bonus Session: "Geo-Georgia" - Georgia has a diverse geology: red brick clays, monument granite, marble, and gold, a "cloud forest" in one of the world's oldest mountain ranges, loamy mid-Georgia "Tifton" soils, sandy coastal plains, and barrier islands off the coast of Savannah. See and feel the differences while learning what each of Georgia's geologic regions means to Georgia business and agriculture.

"Geo-Georgia" Program:

Ask about our "Geo-Georgia" geology program! Feel the difference in the soils between each of Georgia's geographic regions. Learn about the nation's first gold-rush, "King Cotton" and "goober peas", Georgia's "little Grand Canyon", our "monumental" marble and granite, and see current-day Georgia minerals and their uses!
